How do I connect my laptop to my other computer for Internet?

What I said might not make sense. My brother just got comcast, in the past we’ve been using DSL. When we were using DSL,i would connect the ethernet cable to the ethernet hub. And it would work fine. But now eversince we got comcast it keep saying this, with the Ethernet cable connected,”Currently Connected to:Unidentified Network”

Is it blocking me out or am i suppose to change some settings?Or do i need a different type of router …maybe wireless?Linksys or belken(all i can think of)?Even if i did get the wireless routers will it work 100% of the time?

and this one program in my laptop says this”Possible cause:IP address was not set properly”wth is it talking about?

ANd…they offer a number of solutions which i have no clue of what theyre saying LOL.

I hope you guys understood the questions im asking. All answers are appreciated. If you can, please walk me through the instruction. Anyways THanks.I hope to hear good news.

OH! my laptop is a Toshiba Satelite L45..

Ok, you switched from DSL to cable and now you can’t connect.

First off, you mentioned that you where connected to a “hub”. I believe you mean router. If it is a hub, then I would replace the hub with a router. This would greatly improve internet speed and be more secure.

But I am assuming that you mean router. So, my first question would be, does the other PC have internet? I am guessing yes, if you where able to post this question. If not, then your router may be configured incorrectly; or while everything is connected there should be a small reset button on the back of the Comcast Modem. Try pressing that button and wait for the modem to reboot, then try the internet again.

If that does not work, consult the Instructions of the router to set everything to default settings. And then try the internet again.

Now if the other PC does have the internet, it sounds like your laptop has a manual IP address.

-Click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Network Connections.

-Right click on the icon that says “Local area connection” and select “Properties”.

-Under the “General Tab” select “Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)” then click on the “Properties” button below it.

-Make sure that “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically” are selected, then click ok.

If those settings are correct and the other PC does have internet, that would mean a hardware problem. Try a different ethernet cable and make sure that the Network Card in the laptop works. To test the laptop, try plugging it in directly to the modem. If this does not work, then try a new network card.

If all this still fails, I would say buy a new router. Stick with D-Link or Linksys. And follow the intstructions that come with the router.
